Kyneton footballers can look forward to more opportunities to kick goals thanks to a brandnew playing surface at Barkly Square, backed by the Allan Labor Government.
Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas today joined Macedon Ranges Shire Council representatives and club members to officially open the new surface, made possible by$500,000 from the Government’s World Game Facilities Fund.
Barkly Square is home to the Kyneton and District Soccer Club and is also used by the Rifle Club and Obedience Dog Club.
The old playing surface was plagued by poor drainage and was uneven, resulting in the frequent relocation of training and games to facilities outside of the local area, often placing financial and time burden on players and families.
Works at the reserve have stripped the surface and re-graded the ground, while also installing new irrigation and drainage systems, to ensure the venue is accessible and usable throughout the year. Santa Ana Couch grass and synthetic cricket wickets were also installed to ensure Barkly Square can be used for football and cricket all year round.
The new surface promises to be a game-changer for the Rangers, providing them with a modern home ground that can support the growth of their programs and foster a sense of club pride.
For other clubs, the upgrades will provide a central sport and recreation hub that will unite local players in a single location, helping to build relationships between clubs and the community.
The Victorian Budget 2023/24 is providing more than $213 million to deliver and improve community sports infrastructure and support initiatives that boost participation and inclusion in local sports clubs and organisations.
This brings the Victorian Government’s investment into community sport and active recreation infrastructure to more than $1.9 billion since 2014.Mary-Anne Thomas acknowledged Macedon Ranges Shire Council for its commitment and contribution of more than $750,000 to the project.
