Major construction work to build a safer intersection at Melbourne Road and Kilmore Road in Gisborne will commence soon with a new roundabout to improve traffic flow and visibility.
Delivering these safety improvements is vital to keeping the town moving, as the intersection – used by 12,000 drivers every day – is currently one of Gisborne’s most difficult intersections to navigate.
Improved street lighting and shared user paths will also be delivered as part of the $12.5 million Andrews Labor Government investment.
The current intersection is located on a bend and has poor visibility, making it difficult for traffic to enter and exit Kilmore Road safely. It also lacks connections for pedestrians and cyclists and can be challenging to navigate for drivers unfamiliar with the area.
Preliminary work to prepare for the new safer intersection was completed in late 2021. Telecommunications cables were relocated, powerlines were moved underground to make room for the new roundabout, and redundant power poles at Hamilton Street, Melbourne Road and Kilmore Road were removed.
The bridge over Bunjil Creek, located adjacent to the intersection, will be removed, and replaced with a widened bridge to provide enough space for traffic lanes and shared user paths as part of the new roundabout. In addition, the bluestone foundations of the existing bridge will be re-used as part of the final beautification and landscaping works.
There will be changes to traffic conditions in the area during construction. The Melbourne Road and Kilmore Road intersection and Melbourne Road between Fisher Street and Kilmore Road will be closed for approximately four months while works are completed on the new bridge.
Kilmore Road between Melbourne Road and the bridge over Jacksons Creek will also be closed. A detour will be in place via Station Road. Right turns at the Fisher Street and Aitken Street intersection will also be restricted.
This is one of many road safety projects rolling out across the region with an intersection upgrade at Station Road and Saunders Road in New Gisborne completed in November 2021 and rehabilitation works on two sections of Melbourne-Lancefield Road near Clarkefield and Bolinda due to commence in 4-5 weeks For more information, visit regionalroads.vic.gov.au.

"We’re fixing Gisborne’s most notorious intersection and delivering vital road safety improvements right across the Macedon Ranges."
"Gisborne needs this intersection fixed – with a history of near-misses, locals know just how bad visibility is here, particularly for vehicles turning right onto Melbourne Road."
