The Andrews Labor Government has made one of Gisborne’s busiest thoroughfares safer for pedestrians, with works on the new crossing on Aitken Street now complete.
Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, has joined the Macedon Ranges Council in announcing the completion of works on the $350,000 pedestrian safety upgrade.
Pedestrian lights have been installed on Aitken Street to cater for the large numbers of people that use the major sport and shopping precinct.
Previously, there was no formal crossing for pedestrians to access the busy shopping area, with many people forced to cross at the nearby roundabout, which is deemed a high-risk area.
The new crossing will improve safety for pedestrians crossing the road for sporting activities and the popular local market.
One injury crash has occurred in Aitken Street between Hamilton Street and Robertson Street in the last five years.
The new crossing is located north of the Hamilton Street roundabout, crossing a service road as a zebra crossing.
Pedestrian lights have been installed on the main section of Aitken Street with another zebra crossing in place on the opposite service road.
Aitken Street is used by around 12,600 vehicles each day, including 641 heavy vehicles.
The Building our Regions program is a Labor Government funding package designed to undertake high-value, small-scale community safety and improvement projects.
The projects are identified in collaboration with local councils and the local community.
