THREE BILLION CONTAINERS AND COUNTING
Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) continues to deliver big wins, with Victorians returning more than three billion containers.
That is $300 million going back into the pockets of Victorians.
The scheme, CDS Vic, rewards Victorians with a 10-cent refund while reducing litter and turning drink containers into new recycled products. It provides Victorians with the opportunity to return eligible drink containers at 625 refund collection points across the state.
Victorians have made more than 19 million transactions, returning an average of 154 containers each time in its first three years.
More than 6,000 charities and community groups have raised more than $3 million through the CDS Vic, thanks to the generosity and community spirit of Victorians.
Since the scheme launched in November 2023:
5,282,798 drink containers have been returned at Hepburn Shire Council CDS collection points, with $528,279.80 back in the community’s pocket.
10,141,217 drink containers have been returned at Macedon Ranges Shire Council CDS collection points, with $1,014,121.70 back in the community’s pocket.
15,921,011 drink containers have been returned at Moorabool Shire Council CDS collection points, with $1,592,101.10 back in the community’s pocket.
8,418,008 drink containers have been returned at Mount Alexander Shire Council CDS collection points, with $841,800.80 back in the community’s pocket.
Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas said strong public support had driven the success of CDS Vic, with Victorians cashing in on the 10-cent return.
“It is great to see so many everyday Victorians getting behind CDS Vic in record numbers.”
“Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme is delivering real results for the environment, communities and the economy. By keeping containers out of landfill and waterways, CDS Vic is helping build a cleaner, greener Victoria,” Ms Thomas said.
“The scheme is an important part of building Victoria’s circular economy. CDS Vic is increasing the volume and quality of recycling, optimising reuse of used drink containers and reducing Victoria’s litter by 71%.”
